Part A:
Make new dial-up connection

1.Click on the "Start" then "Settings"

 

2.Click on the "Dial-Up Networking"

3. Click on the "Make New Connection"

4.Type "us-it.net" (excluding quotations). The "Select a Device" field should show your modem. If not, click the drop-down arrow and select your modem.
Click Next.

5.Choose the correct Area Code for the connection you will be dialing. This should *almost always* be the same area code as your area code. Type in the ISP's local access number. If you are unsure about the area code, or the local access number, contact US-IT.
Click Next.

6.The last screen will show that you have successfully created a Dial-up Networking connection. Click Finish.

7. Once the Dial-up Networking connection is created, you need to modify some settings.

Double Click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop.
Double Click "Control Panel"
Once the Control Panel opens, double click "Dial-up Networking"
Right Click the "My Connection" icon (or whatever you named the new connection), and select Properties.

8. Verify the local access number, area code, and modem type are correct.
Click Networking at the top of the window.

9. Generally, the only box you want to have checked on this screen is TCP/IP.
Click the Security tab at the top of the window.

10. You can enter the username you use to connect to your ISP in the User Name box followed by @us-it.net. You may enter your password in the Password box. If you wish to make Windows dial this connection automatically, put a check in the Connect Automatically box.

Everything else in the Security window should be blank. Unless your ISP has specifically told you to enter something in Domain Name, or told you to check a box under Advanced security options, you should leave these fields blank.

NOTE:If you leave the username and password fields blank, you will be prompted to enter this information each time you connect to the Internet.
Click the Scripting tab at the top.

11.In general, scripting is not used. This option was required before PAP (Password Authentication Protocol) was invented. Almost all ISP's today use PAP, thus scripting is not used.

The Scripting window should be blank, unless your ISP has instructed you to enter something here.

Click Multilink at the top.

12. In general, Multilink cannot used with most ISP's. This option would allow you to use 2 modems to connect to your ISP at once, increasing your speed. The theory is both modems share the workload, so your upload/download speeds are faster.

Most ISP's do not support this, and most users do not have 2 modems in their computers, so this option is rarely used.

Make sure the dot is in Do not use additional devices, unless specifically instructed to do so by your ISP.

Click the Dialing tab at the top of the window.

13.If you want this connection to be the default connection (you probably do), put a dot in the "This is the default Internet connection" circle. Put a dot in the "Always dial my default connection" box.

NOTE: The make default connection box will allow your computer to automatically dial and connect to the Internet whenever Windows detects you need to be connected to the Internet. (ex. opening your e-mail program, Web browser, or FTP program)

The rest of the options on this page are personal preferences. Set as you wish. Click OK.

That's it. You have successfully made a Dial-up Networking connection in Windows ME.
